🌟 Day 20: Korean Pronunciation Rule – Batchim + ㄹ = ㄴ Sound Shift

thanks2korea 2025. 4. 6. 09:21

Hi everyone!
Welcome back to another day of mastering Korean pronunciation! Today, we’re diving into a cool and important sound rule that happens when a final consonant (Batchim) is followed by the letter ㄹ.

🔍 What Happens?

When a syllable ends with certain Batchim sounds (like ㄱ, ㅁ, ㅂ, etc.) and the next syllable starts with ㄹ,
the ㄹ often changes into ㄴ, and the sound becomes smoother and easier to pronounce.

This process is called “ㄴ insertion” or “ㄴ assimilation”.

📘 Examples

Original Pronounced As Meaning
국립 (guk + rip) 궁닙 [gung-nip] national (as in national museum)
입력 (ip + ryuk) 임녁 [im-nyeok] input
학력 (hak + ryeok) 항녁 [hang-nyeok] academic background
심리 (sim + ri) 심니 [sim-ni] psychology

🧠 Why Does This Matter?
• It helps you understand native pronunciation better.
• You won’t be confused when spoken Korean sounds different from how it’s written.
• It makes your speaking more natural and fluent.

🎧 Practice Time!

Try reading the words out loud and notice how the ㄹ becomes ㄴ:
• 국립 → [궁닙]
• 입력 → [임녁]
• 학력 → [항녁]
• 심리 → [심니]

Great job today!
These pronunciation rules might seem tricky at first, but with practice, they’ll feel like second nature.
Let’s keep going—your Korean is getting better every day! See you tomorrow!
