🌟 Day 43: Pronunciation Rule – When ㅎ Meets ㅅ or ㅆ

thanks2korea 2025. 4. 16. 21:46

Hello again, everyone!
You’re doing great on your Hangul journey! Today, we’re diving into another cool pronunciation rule involving the letter ㅎ (h).

🔍 Today’s Rule

When ㅎ comes before or after ㅅ (s) or ㅆ (ss)…

➡️ These sounds combine to create a stronger /sh/ sound (like “sh” in shoe)
➡️ Or, ㅎ disappears, depending on the word and flow.

It’s all about making speech smoother and more natural!

📘 Examples

Word Hangul Pronunciation Meaning
좋아요 좋아요 조아요 (joayo) It’s good
않습니다 않습니다 안씀니다 (ansseumnida) (formal negative)
못쓰다 못쓰다 몯쓰다 (mot-sseuda) can’t use
놓습니다 놓습니다 논씀니다 (non-sseumnida) to put (formal)

In these examples, ㅎ either disappears or merges, making ㅅ/ㅆ sound stronger (almost like a “ss” or “sh” sound).

🗣 Practice Time!

Try reading these out loud:
• 좋아요 → 조아요
• 못쓰다 → 몯쓰다
• 놓습니다 → 논씀니다

This rule may seem small, but it’ll help you sound more like a native speaker!

Keep practicing, and see you tomorrow for another fun Korean tip!
You’re doing amazing! Keep it up!
