thanks2korea 2025. 4. 15. 08:25

Hello, Korean learners! 👋
You're doing such an amazing job sticking with Korean every day! 🎉
Today, we're going to look at another very useful pronunciation rule that will help you sound more natural like a native speaker.

🔍 Today's Rule

When ㅎ (h) is followed by ㅁ (m) or ㄴ (n) in a word:

➡️ The ㅎ sound disappears, and the ㅁ or ㄴ becomes stronger.

This is because ㅎ is a soft, airy sound, and nasal sounds like ㅁ and ㄴ take over smoothly in pronunciation.

📘 Examples

Word Hangul Pronunciation Meaning

전화 전화 저나 phone
삶은 삶은 살문 boiled (as in “boiled egg”)
괜한 괜한 괜안 useless / unnecessary

Notice how the ㅎ disappears, and the following consonant takes over the sound.

🗣 Practice Time!

Try reading these out loud:

  • 전화 → 저나
  • 삶은 → 살문
  • 괜한 → 괜안

Sounds smoother, right? 😄
This is how native speakers naturally blend the sounds in everyday conversation.

Tomorrow, we’ll explore more fun pronunciation patterns.
Keep up the great work, and see you then! 💪✨
