Hello, everyone!
Ready to unlock another useful Korean pronunciation tip?
Today, we’re going to explore how ㅎ (h) changes the pronunciation of ㅅ (s) when they come together.
⸻

🔍 Today’s Rule
When ㅎ (h) comes before ㅅ (s) in a word or phrase:
➡️ ㅅ is pronounced as ㅆ (ss) – a stronger, more tense “s” sound.
Even though the spelling stays the same, the pronunciation becomes stronger.
⸻
🧠 Why does this happen?
The Korean language likes to keep the flow of pronunciation smooth.
When ㅎ is followed by ㅅ, the influence of ㅎ makes the ㅅ sound stronger, just like how it affects other consonants (as we saw with ㄱ, ㄷ, ㅂ in Day 34).
⸻
📘 Examples
Word Spelling Pronunciation Meaning
못해요 mot-hae-yo 모쌔요 (mo-ssae-yo) I can’t do it
좋소 joh-so 조쏘 (jo-sso) (Old/formal) That’s good
못살아 mot-sal-a 모쌀아 (mo-ssal-a) I can’t stand it!
These changes often appear in spoken Korean, especially in casual or fast speech.
⸻
🗣 Try Saying It!
Practice saying the following pairs slowly, then a bit faster:
• 못해요 → 모쌔요
• 못살아 → 모쌀아
• 좋소 → 조쏘
Feel how the ㅎ strengthens the ㅅ sound naturally?
⸻
You’re doing an amazing job by learning these pronunciation rules!
Keep practicing and listening, and soon these patterns will become second nature.
See you tomorrow for another exciting lesson!
