Yesterday, we learned about the structure of Hangul syllables. Today, we’re going to learn about Batchim (받침, final consonant sound)!

Batchim refers to the consonant at the end of a syllable. It can change the pronunciation of words and affect how sentences flow. At first, it might seem tricky, but once you understand the rules, it becomes much easier! 🚀


🔠 What Is Batchim?

Batchim is the final consonant in a Hangul syllable block.
For example:

  • 길 (gil) → ‘ㄹ’ is the batchim.
  • 밥 (bap) → ‘ㅂ’ is the batchim.
  • 책 (chaek) → ‘ㄱ’ is the batchim.

📌 Words without batchim: 나무 (namu), 바다 (bada), 모자 (moja)
📌 Words with batchim: 눈 (nun), 숲 (sup), 집 (jip)


🔹 Batchim Pronunciation Rules

Words with batchim follow specific pronunciation patterns. Let’s take a look at the basic rules!

1️⃣ Batchim That Keep Their Original Sound

These batchim sounds are pronounced as they are.

  • → Soft ‘g’ sound: 책 (chaek), 박 (bak)
  • → ‘n’ sound: 산 (san), 돈 (don)
  • ㄷ/ㅌ → ‘d’ sound: 곧 (god), 맛 (mat)
  • → ‘l’ sound: 달 (dal), 길 (gil)
  • → ‘m’ sound: 밤 (bam), 솜 (som)
  • → ‘b’ sound: 밥 (bap), 집 (jip)
  • → ‘ng’ sound: 강 (gang), 성 (seong)

2️⃣ Batchim That Change Their Sound

Some batchim change slightly when pronounced.

  • ㄲ, ㅋ → ㄱ: 부엌 (bueok) → Sounds like ‘부억’
  • ㅅ, ㅆ, ㅈ, ㅊ → ㄷ: 맛 (mat), 빛 (bit) → Sounds like ‘맏’, ‘빋’
