Hello again, friends! 🌼
Are you ready to sound more like a native speaker? Today, we’re going to explore another super useful pronunciation rule that helps make Korean sound smooth and natural. Let’s jump in! 🚀
🔍 Today’s Rule
When a final consonant (받침) is ㅂ (b/p)
and the next syllable starts with ㄴ (n) or ㅁ (m)...
➡️ ㅂ changes to ㅁ (m)
This is another case of nasal assimilation, just like what we saw in Day 28.
It helps make the transition between sounds easier for your mouth!
🧠 Why does this happen?
Try to say “밥먹다” (to eat a meal) quickly.
Saying “밥먹다” with a clear ㅂ and ㅁ sound can be tricky.
So Korean speakers naturally soften the ㅂ to ㅁ → “밤먹다”
The pronunciation becomes smoother and more natural.
📘 Example Words
Korean Pronunciation Meaning
밥먹다 (bap + meokda) | 밤먹다 [bam-meok-da] | to eat a meal |
잡는 (jab + neun) | 잠는 [jam-neun] | catching (present tense) |
입물 (ip + mul) | 임물 [im-mul] | mouth water (rare, but useful for pattern practice!) |
🗣 Practice Time!
- 밥먹다 → [밤먹다]
- 잡는 → [잠는]
- 입물 → [임물]
Keep practicing and soon these changes will feel totally natural!
You’re doing great – see you tomorrow! 💪✨
