🌟 Day 38: Pronunciation Rule – When ㅎ (h) Meets ㄹ (r/l)

thanks2korea 2025. 4. 15. 08:22

Hi there, language explorers! 🌈
You've come such a long way, and I'm super proud of you! 👏
Today, we're diving into another fun and useful Korean pronunciation tip that will help you sound more natural when speaking.

🔍 Today's Rule

When ㅎ (h) comes before or after ㄹ (r/l) in a word:

➡️ The ㅎ sound disappears, and ㄹ becomes stronger or changes slightly in pronunciation.

🧠 Why does this happen?

The ㅎ sound is soft and airy, and is a quick flick of the tongue.
When they come together, the ㅎ gets dropped, and the ㄹ may become a bit more tense or clear.

This change helps native speakers speak faster and more smoothly!

📘 Example Words

Word Hangul Pronunciation Meaning

실험 실험 시럼 experiment
발표 발표 발표 (ㅎ is silent, ㄹ stays) presentation
철학 철학 처락 philosophy

Notice how the ㅎ seems to disappear, making everything flow more naturally.

🗣 Practice Time!

Say these out loud:

  • 실험 → 시럼
  • 철학 → 처락
  • 발표 → 발표 (no real change here, but ㅎ is silent)

You’ll sound much more like a native speaker in no time! 🌟

Keep up the amazing work! Tomorrow, we’ll look at another common pronunciation rule that will boost your fluency.
You're doing great—see you soon! 💖
